Smith works out, is eager to settle in

Emmitt Smith has found a home, although he won't say in what part of the Valley.

"I'm not inclined to tell you," he said with a smile.

The NFL career rushing leader also hopes to find a home quickly with his new team, the Cardinals. He took part in his first on-field workout Tuesday with the offensive coaches and most of the skill-position players.

"I'm getting acquainted with the offense, but I know most of the offense, anyway, because it's the system we ran back when we won the Super Bowl (with Dallas)," Smith said.

The workout times are different than those to which he was accustomed with the Cowboys.

So are weightlifting sessions in small groups.

"I have to get adjusted to that," he said. "I'm used to seeing 15, 20, 30 guys in the weight room at one time, a lot of weights clankety-clanking. But everybody seems to be rolling in, doing their job."

Settling into his new home will be an important step in his assimilation, according to Smith.

"Once I get that behind me then I truly can be here instead of living here in a hotel, having to check out of a hotel when I'm leaving town, renting cars, all those kinds of things," Smith said.

His wife, Pat, two daughters and one son will move to the Valley with him at the end of the school year. Until then, he will fly back and forth on weekends.

The Smiths are expecting their fourth child during the upcoming football season.

He is getting to know his new teammates. Smith said new Cardinals quarterback Jeff Blake "in my opinion is the best long-ball thrower in the league."

"I can't think of too many other quarterbacks who can throw the ball as deep, on the money, on a rope like he does," Smith said.

Smith is eager to see new offensive coordinator Jerry Sullivan's first training camp and to get a feel for how Sullivan calls plays.
