Those who have made the trip to upstate Webster for the state outdoor track and field championships may notice a good number of Section 1 track coaches smiling.

Day one of the two-day event was a major success, despite some of the biggest names in Section 1 track not competing due to season-ending injuries.

But others stepped up Saturday.

One wasn't a surprise.

John Jay-Cross River's Sloan Wasserman ran an outdoor personal-best 9:28.99 in the girls 3,000. That won her not only the girls public school Class B title but also the state Federation (all schools, private and public, of all sizes) championship.

"It was pretty hot today, so I just focused on getting the win and had a pretty fast last lap," said Wasserman, who took the lead with about 450 meters to go.

"I obviously wanted a little faster but I was more focused on getting the win."

Pine Plains' Violet Bliss was third in the 3,000 in girls public school Class C in 10:01 and Arlington's Kirsten Anastasio ran 10:14.82 for fifth in Class A

Wasserman, who also won the girls state indoor 3,000 title this past winter, has qualified to compete in the girls 2,000-meter steeplechase where she's the national leader this spring, as well as the 1,600 and 4x800 relay. Doing all three is probably unrealistic and it seems the 1,600 will be the likely race where she'll scratch, but that has yet to be determined.

Another senior, Clarkstown South's Connor Sullivan, who's committed to compete for Div. I Manhattan, was second in the Fed and first in public Class A in the boys shot put. His top throw went 59-8.25.

For Wasserman, who'll start her collegiate running career next fall at Div. I Boston College, and for Sullivan, Bliss and Anastasio, Saturday was one of the final chapters of their high school running stories.

But others are just getting started.

Consider that the first two finishers not just in the girls Class A public school 800 but also the state Federation (all sizes of pubic and private schools) 800 were Scarsdale's Adriana Pettinelli (2:07.4) and New Rochelle's Olivia Solomon (2:08.4). Sixth overall in a Fed field of 47 and fifth in Class A was Horace Greeley's Melina Santee (2:10.74).

All are 10th-graders. Junior Emma Curran of Hackley (2:11.17) grabbed the eighth-place slot in the Fed.

And while they've yet to earn a medal, three more sophomore girls will have a good shot to do so Sunday after all qualified in the 200. In Class B, Hen Hud's Sophia Savatgy's 24.55 was the top time of the day and Rye Country Day's Payton Richardson was the top qualifier in Class C at 24.51. While not leading Class A, 24.87 also got their friend, New Rochelle's Elisa Crisp, a spot in the A final.

Again, all are sophomores.

Of course, more than sophomores excelled from the Lower Hudson Valley Saturday.

Finishing fourth in the Fed, Horace Greeley junior Ryan Sykes' 9:08.12 run in the boys 3,200 earned him gold in public school Class A.

Pine Plains' Dan McPherson ((9:30.09) was sixth in Class C public.

Bronxville senior John Sekula clocked 54.25 to take silver in the boys Class C 400-meter hurdles. Albertus Magnus senior Heath Miller medaled in sixth place in 55.56.

Westlake's GianMarco DelDuca (55.47) was third in the Class B boys 400 hurdles and Ardsley's Lou Baousson was fourth (55.59).

New Rochelle's Alexis Smith (1:02.63) medaled in sixth in the Class B girls 400 hurdles and Nyack's Jayda Johnson medaled in sixth in the girls Class B 400 hurdles (1:04.91).

Suffern (Will Weber, Jake Tarrant, Will Lynch and Micheal Cromwell) ran 42.01 for fourth place in the boys Class A 4x100 relay.

Multiple medals in boys long jump, led by Sleepy Hollow's Richardson

Sleepy Hollow's Brayden Richardson not only won the boys Class B long jump title but his 23-7 leap placed him second overall in the state Federation.

North Rockland's Carlos Eliezer (23-5.25) was third in Class A and fourth in the Fed. Suffern's Jake Tarrant medaled in fourth in Class A at 22-10.75.

Sleepy Hollow's Dariel Llitera Picardo (21-10.75) was sixth in Class B

Other medalists

Horace Greeley's Lorelai Nocca cleared 11-6 for fifth place in Class A public in girls pole vault and Edgemont's Sophia Kumar, at 11-0, was fifth in B.

Shiloh Scott-Greaves of Dover was fourth in girls Class C in the long jump at 18-11.

Ardsley's Mioko Martin (18-10.25) won silver in girls Class B long jump.

John Jay-EF's Johnson just points out of first overall in boys pentathlon

The boys and girls pentathlons will be decided Sunday and through Saturday, several Section 1 athletes were in medal position.

Chief among them was Purdue-commit and John Jay-East Fishkill senior Nate Johnson, currently ranked No. 1 in the country all-time with his Section 1 state qualifier point total of 4,039 points, sat in first place in Class A and just four points out of the No. 1 Fed spot with 2,219 points through three events.

North Rockland's Nile France (2,046) was second in Class A and fourth overall.

Bronxville's Will Bringle (1,867 points) was sitting in the last medal spot, sixth, in Class C.
