The Seattle Seahawks lost several keynote players to the start of free agency on Monday, including running back Kenneth Walker III and EDGE Boye Mafe. The most notable departure may be that of safety Coby Bryant. Bryant intends to sign a three-year contract with the Chicago Bears worth $40 million.
Bryant is a 26-year-old ascending safety who ranked No. 3 in the NFL in interceptions in 2025 with four takeaways. The former Cincinnati standout also registered seven pass breakups, with one forced fumble. His departure leaves behind a big hole in the Seahawks' defense at free safety.
Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald loves three-safety looks. Bryant's exit leaves Seattle with just two starting-caliber players at the position in Julian Love and Nick Emmanwori, unless they expect Ty Okada or AJ Finley to step up. If the Seahawks want to sign another safety, they should seriously consider taking a run at Kevin Byard.
The Bears probably aren't re-signing Byard. Ironcially, Bryant may be his replacement in Chicago. The veteran Byard should be available at a team-friendly number for John Schneider. He's 32 and coming off a two-year, $15.5 million contract.
Byard is an excellent communicator who led the NFL in interceptions this past campaign with seven. The Seahawks could replace Bryant's penchant for takeaways with a true ball-hawk in Byard. The experienced safety would be an outstanding fit in Macdonald's defense.
