The Jacksonville Jaguars' defense could still be looking to add reinforcements.

Although the defense is expected to be very good in 2026, there are questions about whether the team will be able to adequately replace linebacker Devin Lloyd, who left for the Carolina Panthers as a free agent after being named a Second-Team All-Pro during his last season in Duval.

Jacksonville is putting a lot of faith in Ventrell Miller, who has never been a full-time starter, to fill Lloyd's starting spot next to Foye Oluokun.

The early reviews on Miller have been positive, but the regular season is a different animal than OTAs and minicamp.

If the Jaguars want to make a splash addition to their defense, they are in luck. One of the top-100 players in the NFL is still a free agent, and he could be the answer Jacksonville may be looking for.

Linebacker Bobby Wagner, even at 36 years old, is still going strong. Strong enough that he is still considered one of the best players in the league. As the NFL's 81st-ranked player heading into the upcoming season, Wagner is still looking for a team to call home for his 15th season.

Wagner And Jaguars Are A Perfect Fit

Wagner and the Jaguars have been labeled as a perfect fit since early in the offseason. Even though Jacksonville is confident in Miller's ability to step in as a starter, the future Hall of Famer checks every box a Super Bowl-caliber team like the Jaguars could want.

Production? Wagner's 162 total tackles last season were fifth in the NFL. His 2000 career tackles are third all-time and only 59 behind Baltimore Ravens legend Ray Lewis for the most ever.

Wagner also chipped in 4.5 sacks in 2025. His ability to get to the quarterback could be a bonus for a team that may struggle to get sacks from anyone not named Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker.

Durability? Wagner hasn't missed a game since Week 2 of the 2018 season. He also played roughly 99% of defensive snaps for the Washington Commanders in 2025.

Leadership? If you can find a better leader and mentor for a linebacker room, I'd love to meet him.

So would all 32 NFL teams.

Final Thoughts

Wagner could be the final piece of a championship-level defense for the Jaguars.

He is the perfect player for Jacksonville: productive, consistent, durable, and likely available on a one-year deal that won't be overly expensive.

Having a defensive coordinator like Anthony Campanile almost guarantees that Wagner will be coached up to reach his ceiling, which is still unbelievably high for a 36-year-old.

It's understandable that Jacksonville wants to give Miller a chance to prove himself as a starter. However, Wagner is simply better, and for a defensive looking to help lead the team to its first-ever Super Bowl, having the best 11 guys on the field that you can is a must.

Bobby Wagner is going to make a team much better in 2026. That team should be the Jacksonville Jaguars.
