It's been a few weeks since we last talked about the Cleveland Browns' quarterback situation. There were rumors that Shedeur Sanders may be traded if he doesn't manage to beat out Deshaun Watson, but it seems like the tables have turned in favor of Sanders.
According to Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot, Sanders is quietly making a move in the race.
Cabot noticed something had changed during the Browns' mini-camp.
“I thought it was very significant that when we showed up for the very first day of mandatory minicamp, the player taking most of the first-team reps on that day, on the first day of mandatory minicamp, was Shedeur Sanders, I just thought that was significant,” Cabot said.
It is significant because Cabot had all but given the starting position to Watson even before the pair had gotten to mini camp or fall training camp, but somewhere along the way, Sanders is starting to show his new coaches what he can do, and that has to be a relief to them.
Maybe Sanders is starting to play better, knowing that it looks as if the team won't be trading him, as was once thought, which may have taken the pressure off him. Now, even though Cabot said that Sanders is quietly making a move, what she didn't say was that Watson has lost the lead.
If anything, Sanders' improvement makes for an interesting quarterback race again. Browns general manager Andrew Berry talked about Sanders' "phenomenal growth," so this latest news about Sanders may be a big shock to Brown and, as it may be, to the rest of the NFL.
