With the Los Angeles Lakers on a three-game losing streak, the atmosphere surrounding the team is starting to darken a bit. While virtually everyone knew coming into this season that the Lakers weren't a championship-caliber team, the negativity and criticisms are starting to get heavier.

Many people have pointed out the team's lack of defense, both on the perimeter and near the rim, lack of speed and athleticism, inability to consistently hit 3-pointers and lack of a stellar supporting cast around Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and LeBron James. There is also an increasing feeling that the three-star setup of Doncic, Reaves and James simply won't work.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe, who is a huge fan of James, said on his "Nightcap" podcast that the Lakers are simply "a bad basketball team," and that it doesn't matter whether James, who is in the final year of his contract, is on the team or not.

“They’re a BAD basketball team. … They’re not a championship-contending team with LeBron. They're not. They're not gonna be a championship-contending team without LeBron.”

There is an increasing amount of criticism being directed at Luka Doncic for the flaws he has displayed. Sharpe joined that growing chorus by pointing out the superstar's lackluster defense and tendency to argue with referees.

“… A lot of times Luka's numbers doesn’t correlate to winning. When a guy has 41-8-8…but he just can't play defense. He just can't…that's who he is…He said, 'Well i need to stop arguing with officials,' you can't that's who you are.”

Doncic put up those 41 points, eight rebounds and eight assists Sharpe referenced in Thursday's game against the Phoenix Suns. But while Los Angeles built a 13-point lead in the third quarter, they fell behind by 12 points in the fourth period, and its late Doncic-led rally fell short.

L.A. ended up losing by three points when, on the Suns' last possession, it broke down defensively and gave up an open 3-pointer by Royce O'Neale. Reaves missed what would've been the game-tying trey just before the final horn, and the Lakers lost, 113-110.
