Shams Charania breaks silence on controversial MVP announcement originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
ESPN insider Shams Charania explained why he announced the NBA's MVP before it was supposed to be revealed.
Charania appeared on the Pat McAfee Show and explained the reasoning behind his timing for making the announcement, saying he chose to go public when he did in order to ensure the information was fully verified and ready to be reported.
"When I get news, when I get information, if I've vetted it, like I did late Saturday night, early Sunday morning, when I have news 100%, no matter how big, no matter how small, and in this case, obviously, very, very big accomplishment, very big news around the NBA, for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander being the 14th player in NBA history to be the back-to-back league MVP," he said on the Pat McAfee Show.
"He's only, you know, since Stephen Curry, the only guard to be back-to-back. There's a list of accomplishments here. So this is a massive story. And when I get it, I vet it. And then my job is to report the news. And so that's all I focus on. That's what I wake up thinking about. That's what I go to sleep thinking about. I feel the responsibility."
Charania received a lot of criticism for sharing the news when he did. Blake Griffin, a former NBA All-Star who is now a studio analyst for Amazon Prime, told the reporter to "go to brunch, nerd" instead of breaking the story on a Sunday morning.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joins rare back-to-back MVP company
Oklahoma City Thunder superstar guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took home his second consecutive NBA MVP award.
He became only the 14th player in NBA history to win back-to-back MVP awards. The last player to do so was Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic in 2021 and 2022.
Gilgeous-Alexander delivered yet another incredible season, averaging 31.1 points per game, 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 55.3 percent from the field.
The Thunder and Gilgeous-Alexander are in the midst of becoming the first repeat champions since the 2018 Warriors. They will take on the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals starting on Monday.
