A couple of hours after the Oklahoma City Thunder destroyed the Memphis Grizzlies in a 131-80 Game 1 win, Shai Gilgeoud-Alexander received another batch of good news.
Gilgeous-Alexander was officially named a 2024-25 MVP award finalist. He's joined by Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo. This shouldn't be a shocker as he's been at the front of the prestigious award race for the last month of the regular season.
The Thunder went a historic 68-14 with an all-time best plus-12.9 point differential. They had one of the greatest regular-season campaigns in NBA history. Gilgeous-Alexander was the face of that. He had a third straight 30-point campaign.
Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 32.7 points on 51.9% shooting, 6.4 assists and five rebounds in 76 games. He shot 37.5% from 3 on 5.7 attempts. He was the NBA's best scorer this season. He led the league in 20-point, 30-point, 40-point and 50-point games.
Barring an upset, Gilgeous-Alexander should be the MVP winner. All of the early voting results and vibes lean that way. He'd become the third player in Thunder history to win the award. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are the other two winners.
