The Pittsburgh Pirates have another exciting young pitcher in the organization.
Pittsburgh selected Seth Hernandez sixth overall in the 2025 MLB Draft out of Corona High School in Corona, California. He signed with Pittsburgh for a $7.25 million bonus on July 26, setting a record for the highest bonus ever given to a high school pitcher.
Hernandez made his professional debut this season in Single-A and was dominant, as he had a 0.96 ERA in 28 innings, while striking out 50. He was promoted to High-A in May, as the 20-year-old continues to be dominant.
Although he’s in his first pro season, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington is pleased with what he’s seen.
“We got to remind ourselves that he is 12 months out from high school prom,” Cherington said on 93.7 The Fan. “This has happened really fast, and we want to position him for a really long career. He’s off to a great start.
Hernandez has allowed just one run in his last three games in High-A. In his first pro season, he’s 6-1 with a 2.02 ERA in 14 starts, and in High-A, he’s 3-1 with a 2.88 ERA in eight starts.
Although Hernandez has been dominant in his first pro season, he’s still likely a few years away from reaching the MLB.
