As Serena Williams prepares for her first singles match in nearly four years, tennis fans everywhere are counting down the days until she meets 20-year-old Maya Joint in a first-round match at Wimbledon.
Williams, 44, was contemplative when she met with the media on Sunday, June 28, to preview her return to Grand Slam competition. In addition to playing singles for the first time since the 2022 U.S. Open, she'll also be competing in doubles with her older sister Venus.
"We do have memories sometimes," Williams said, "Olympic memories in particular."
Venus and Serena have teamed up for three Olympic gold medals in women's doubles − in Sydney (2000), Beijing (2008) and in London (2012). In addition, Serena also won gold in women's singles at at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in 2012.
A return to the storied grass courts will be both familiar and different for her this time around.
"In general, my expectations are definitely different for the first time in my career," the seven-time Wimbledon singles champion said. "Not that I never enjoyed it before because I wouldn't be here today, but I'm gonna enjoy being out there."
Williams made her return to competitive tennis at the Queen's Club, where she and partner Victoria Mboko won their first-round match, but had to withdraw when Mboko injured her knee in a singles match.
Williams partnered with Karolina Muchova in doubles at the Berlin Open before getting back together with her sister for Wimbledon.
Williams will get an early test in the first round of the singles draw against an opponent in Joint, who's 24 years younger. That match will take place on Tuesday, June 30.
