Serena Williams has been trending toward this for months.

And now the tennis legend seems on the verge of a return to the court for a professional tournament for the first time since 2022.

According to the Served podcast, Williams is seeking a doubles wildcard spot for the Queen's WTA 500 event in London that begins on June 8.

If Williams gets the wildcard spot, she would play with 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko, who is ranked No. 9 in the world in singles.

Williams, a 23-time grand slam singles champion, entered the tennis drug testing pool again six months ago, which means she is clear on that front to resume competing when she chooses.

The last time Williams competed professionally was in the 2022 U.S. Open.

Williams is 44 years old and spent 319 weeks in her career ranked as the world No. 1.

She and her sister Venus were icons for a whole generation of tennis players that now populate the professional ranks.

It's hard to know what level of tennis Serena would bring to the court after such a long absence, but she's been training, and she surely still has her competitive fire.

It would be a cool circumstance for the tennis world to see Williams back on the court. For a while, it seemed she wouldn't return.

Someone should also update her Wikipedia page, because as of Thursday at noon, it refers to her as a "former professional tennis player."
