EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — How close was Michael Olise to booting in what would’ve been the goal of the 2026 World Cup?

Late in the first half of France’s round of 32 match against Sweden Tuesday, June 30, Olise very nearly scored a bicycle kick that would’ve been a masterpiece.

The play happened right at the 35-minute mark, when the ball deflected into the air and hovered over Olise. He was standing just off the center of the top of the penalty area, measured the direction of the ball as it fell and launched into an attempted bicycle kick that was well struck.
The ball arced past Sweden keeper Jacob Widell Zetterström, who dove to stop it, but the ball struck the bottom of the right post.
The ball then ricocheted to France forward Ousmane Dembélé, who then blasted a left-footed shot that curled around the left post.
Minutes later, Kylian Mbappé would score the breakthrough goal to give France a 1-0 lead headed into halftime.
