SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners had many opportunities but were unable to take advantage of any of them in a 4-2 loss against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park.
The Mariners went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base. The Reds went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded four. Seattle had six hits to Cincinnati's five.
Despite the opportunities to put up runs leaning in favor of the Mariners, their only two runs came with nobody on.
Seattle first scored in the bottom of the seventh inning — a one-out solo homer courtesy of third baseman Weston Wilson.
Wilson's homer cut the Mariners' deficit to 3-1.
Seattle's second and final run of the game also came via a solo homer. Center fielder Julio Rodriguez, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Luke Raley after being absent of the starting lineup following his early exit from Monday's 8-0 win against the Reds, hit a lead-off solo homer to left-center field in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Rodriguez's homer cut the Mariners' deficit to 3-2.
"I think we knew prior to the game that (Rodriguez) was good to go later in the game if needed," Seattle manager Dan Wilson said in a postgame interview. "He came in and thought he put up a couple really strong at-bats and hit the ball extremely hard both times."
Rodriguez's first at-bat came with runners at first and second in the bottom of the sixth-inning. He hit a 110-mile-per-hour ground ball that was snagged by shortstop Elly De La Cruz, robbing the three-time All-Star of a potential RBI hit and resulting in a force out that left the M's with runners on the corners with two outs, which the team wasn't able to cash in on.
Cincinnati put the game away for good in the top of the ninth inning. Designated hitter Nathaniel Lowe hit a lead-off solo homer off Mariners reliever Michael Rucker.
Lowe's lead-off shot was the third solo homer and third lead-off homer of the game for the Reds. The other two came against starting pitcher Luis Castillo.
Castillo surrendered one lead-off solo homer to De La Cruz in the top of the first inning and another to third baseman (and former Seattle player) Eugenio Suarez in the top of the fourth.
Cincinnati's only run outside of the three blasts came via a sacrifice fly hit by first baseman Sal Stewart in the top of the fifth.
Castillo finished the game with three strikeouts, two walks and three earned runs allowed on four hits (two homers) in seven innings pitched.
"I think I'm going to hear (about that homer from Suarez) for the rest of our lives, I think," Castillo said after the game via interpreter Freddy Llanos on Tuesday. "We have a really good relationship so I don't think I'm ever gonna forget that one."
Rucker, typically a low-leverage arm, was pitching for the second day in a row. High-leverage relievers Eduard Bazardo and Gabe Speier didn't pitch the day before
"With being down in that situation, we've got a quick turnaround again tomorrow," Wilson said. "You've got to weigh all your options there and (Rucker) did throw the ball extremely well last night. I thought he threw the ball well (tonight), too. Lowe was (just) able to get him there."
The Mariners were unable to make up the two-run deficit in the final frame and went down in order to end the game.
Seattle dropped back to .500 (51-51) and fell a half-game behind the Texas Rangers for first place in the American League West with the defeat.
The Mariners will look to clinch their second-straight series win in the rubber match against the Reds at 12:40 p.m. PT on Wednesday.
Emerson Hancock will start for the M's and Brady Singer will take the hill for Cincinnati.
