When the Denver Broncos hold a scrimmage at training camp on Saturday, head coach Sean Payton won't be in attendance.
Instead, Payton (and several members of his coaching staff) are leaving after Friday's practice to travel to Canton, Ohio, to attend the Pro Football Hall of Fame ceremony for quarterback Drew Brees. Payton, who won a Super Bowl with Brees while coaching the New Orleans Saints, will present the QB in Canton on Saturday.
"[W]e’ll have a scripted practice Saturday that’ll be — it’ll start with maybe three punts, then first offense, first defense. That happened a lot when you had that first big scrimmage, and it was always Hall of Fame weekend," Payton said of Saturday's practice plan.
"We can create [starters vs. starters] sometimes, but I’m more interested in, even if we call it the ones are out there, I want to see different players in that group, if that makes sense. It’s not just the same 11 versus the same 11. So we discuss those reps, who’s getting what in some of the positions where there’s a rotation."
With Payton absent, defensive coordinator Vance Joseph will run Saturday's practice. Joseph, of course, has head coach experience from his first stint in Denver. Saturday's enshrinement ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. ET (10:00 a.m. MT) and will be televised on NFL Network and ESPN.
