Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton spoke to members of the media at the NFL's annual meeting in Phoenix earlier this week. Among other topics Payton focused on was the journey of re-signing veteran running back J.K. Dobbins.

After receiving much criticism for not being more of an active participant at the beginning of free agency, Payton fired back at those who felt Denver should have been bigger spenders. "We cannot chase what others outside the building feel like we should be doing," Payton said.

In particular, Payton mentioned Dobbins, who returned to the team on a two-year, $16 million that can reach $20 million if certain incentives are hit. Dobbins is coming off a Lisfranc injury in his foot, which ended his season prematurely, the latest in a string of unfortunate injuries in his career.

Despite Dobbins' injury track record, re-signing him was paramount for the Broncos.

"Dobbins was a priority, ahead of all others," Payton said. "Now that will anger people. We know that he has been injured, and we understand that the injuries haven’t been soft tissue driven. He is someone who is one of those compound multipliers, like he brings 10 others along with him in a positive light. Our success last year, he has some finger prints on that."

At one point in 2025, Dobbins was fifth in the league in rushing. Despite not having played since Week 10, Dobbins led Denver in rushing with 772 yards and four touchdowns last fall. Dobbins looks to come back better than ever in 2026, and continue to be a mentor to second-year back RJ Harvey, as the Broncos look to feature both in a 'backfield by committee' approach.

Dobbins was grateful to return, and is ready to solidify his place in Denver.
