Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton sure has had an eventful last week when it comes to players he coached with the New Orleans Saints.
Payton participated at the enshrinement of Pro Football Hall of Famer Drew Brees on Saturday, and now, another former quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater, announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday.
Payton spoke highly of Bridgewater, who was with the Saints from 2018-19. "Our experience, my experience was fantastic," Payton said after Tuesday's practice. "I sent him a text last night... I saw the same news you guys did, and then it seemed to be more finalized. He was getting on a bus to play a preseason game I think, and we made a trade for him. I know I was at our Touchdown Club banquet like we have here. He was a great asset, a really, really good teammate. He had some rare leadership skills."
Payton knew Bridgewater's role with New Orleans was truly lasting in its impact. "He was important," Payton said. "He was on our team during a ton of wins. When Drew (Brees) got hurt (in 2019), he went 5-0."
Bridgewater also spent the 2021 season in Denver, playing in 14 games, going 7-7 as a starter. He threw for 3,052 yards, scored 20 total touchdowns (18 passing, two rushing) and tossed seven interceptions as a Broncos starter.
Football will likely always be in Bridgewater's DNA. "I think he’ll find his way back into coaching or some role with football," Payton said. "So proud of him."
In the meantime, it's back to business in the NFL. The Broncos will have one final practice (closed to the public) on Wednesday before departing to Georgia, where they will face the Atlanta Falcons in their first preseason contest on Friday.
