After re-signing both Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad, the Denver Broncos released linebacker Dre Greenlaw in a move that saved just over $8 million. It seems to have been a financial decision for the club, and it wasn't an easy one.
“That was a tough one," Broncos coach Sean Payton said at the NFL's annual league meeting. "Here is why: he is so passionate. In my career as a coach, I’ve been lucky enough to coach a lot of passionate players that love the game. I’m always disappointed internally that that didn’t work out because I love that player. I love how he competes. I love all the things he brings. You feel somewhat responsible when it doesn’t work out."
After moving on from Greenlaw, Payton revealed that the team plans to give inside linebacker reps to third-year outside linebacker Jonah Elliss in 2026.
"We knew it would take a little bit of time with Alex and Justin," Payton said. "You’re going to see Elliss take some snaps inside. That is something that we have discussed relative to our depth at the edge. Then we will see where that goes during the draft. Those aren’t fun when you re-sign your own players, and I understand… But when we look at the puzzle, you have to take the red magnets that are [free agents] and put them off the depth chart, then begin to address the ‘musts’, ‘needs’ and ‘wants.'”
For Denver, Singleton and Strnad were musts, and there wasn't room for all three of Singleton, Strnad and Greenlaw. So Greenlaw got the boot, but he quickly landed on his feet, returning to the San Francisco 49ers. The Broncos will now run it back with the two linebackers who started most of the 2025 season.
