Sean O'Malley thinks the string of upsets continues at UFC 330.
Machado Garry (17-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) is a big underdog when he challenges welterweight champion Islam Makhachev (28-1 MMA, 17-1 UFC) in the Aug. 15 main event at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia (Paramount+).
In the past couple of months, the UFC has seen Sean Strickland upset Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 328, and Justin Gaethje stun Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250. Could we see Machado Garry do the same against Makhachev?
"I think Ian gets it done," O'Malley said on his YouTube channel. "Not the way sh*t's been going, but I think Ian's that f*cking good. He's so big, he's so long, and he's so confident. Then Khabib (Nurmagomedov) came out and said, 'Ian's a hard matchup for us.' He's long, he moves well, he moves a lot. He's not going to go in there and get single-legged, easy dumped. He's going to scoop back, he's going to throw, and it''s going to be a difficult fight. I'm excited for it. Dagestan vs. Ireland, this is an epic f*cking fight."
Makhachev will look to break the UFC record for longest active win streak against Machado Garry. He claimed the welterweight title by dominating Jack Della Maddalena on the ground at UFC 322, but O'Malley says Makhachev can't afford another performance like that.
"People were pissed about that fight, remember?" O'Malley said. "He took him down, held him down for 25 minutes. People were like, 'This is not what we want to watch.' That's sometimes how you have to win fights. So if he goes out there and does beat Ian in that same fashion, that's going to hurt his Greatest Of All Time conversation, which is crazy because the guys he's fighting are so high-level."
