Sean McVay may have just fueled one of the wildest NFL storylines of the offseason. The Los Angeles Rams already shook up the league by acquiring Myles Garrett, however, the possibility of Aaron Donald returning from retirement suddenly does not feel as far-fetched as it once did.
For months, Donald’s playing career appeared firmly in the rearview mirror. Now, with a revamped Los Angeles defense and a Super Bowl scheduled to be played at SoFi Stadium this season, the conversation has taken on a life of its own. More importantly, neither Donald nor his former coach seems interested in shutting it down.
Former Pittsburgh Panther and retired NFL defensive tackle Aaron Donald speaks at a press conference prior to the start of the Pittsburgh Panthers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish game at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA on November 15, 2025.
Speaking during Garrett’s introductory press conference on June 2, McVay addressed the growing speculation surrounding Donald’s future. Rather than dismissing the rumors, the Rams head coach admitted he had already discussed Garrett’s arrival with the future Hall of Famer and made it clear a return would be welcomed.
The comments came just days after Donald himself hinted that the Garrett trade had reignited thoughts about playing again. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the former Defensive Player of the Year admitted he is “flirting with the idea” of a comeback. ESPN’s Pat McAfee also shared a text exchange in which Donald acknowledged the move had gotten him thinking.
That is what makes this story so interesting. Donald has not publicly committed to anything but also has not ruled anything out. The timing matters too. Super Bowl LXI is set to be played at SoFi Stadium, giving the Rams a rare chance to chase a championship on their home field. Pair that opportunity with Garrett’s arrival, and it is easy to understand why Donald might be reconsidering his decision.
Even after stepping away from football in 2024, questions about Donald’s physical condition have never really existed. Former teammate Michael Brockers recently suggested the eight-time First-Team All-Pro has remained in the best shape, while Donald’s own workout videos have continued to circulate online. The clips hardly resemble someone who has spent two years disconnected from the game.
If Donald ultimately decides to return, the transaction itself would be straightforward. He currently remains on the Rams’ reserve-retired list, allowing the franchise to process his return without significant complications. What comes next is anyone’s guess. The Rams have already transformed their defense by landing Garrett, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and adding Donald to that front would create a nightmare for opposing offenses and instantly gives the Rams one of the most talented defensive units the league has seen in years.
As for now, it is still speculation. However, after McVay’s latest comments and Donald’s own admission that he is thinking about it, the possibility of one last run no longer feels like a fantasy but feels like something worth watching.

“Aaron’s a guy that I stay really close in touch with; if AD decides he wants to dust him off at the age of 35, he could still do it at a pretty high clip.”
