The Seattle Seahawks re-signed linebacker Drake Thomas Thursday afternoon, their first big move of the 2026 NFL Offseason.
Ian Rapoport reported the news at 1:25 p.m. PST yesterday.
The reported 2-year, $8 million deal, with incentives giving Thomas a chance to take it up to $9 million, seems like excellent value for Seattle.
Thomas became a vital part of the Seahawks historic “Dark Side” defense early on, taking over as a starter at linebacker in Week 3 and running remarkably well in Mike Macdonald’s system. He was immediately one of the most fun players to watch week in and week out, embodying the term “playing with your hair on fire” as well as anyone in recent memory. He looked comfortable and clicked constantly. Beyond all that, though, he seemed to truly understand the value of the defense he played with.
He trusted his teammates to do their jobs so much that he could take advantage of all the havoc created by their dominance. He brought fear coming downhill. As the interior defensive line of Leonard Williams and Byron Murphy II would take on double teams and reset the line of scrimmage, he’d hit the open holes and make violent plays in the backfield. In coverage, he’d position himself just right to take what little parts of the field the secondary of Nick Emmanwori, Devon Witherspoon and company would leave open, making plays on the ball and receivers with the same aggression.
Thomas’ confidence and brutality is exactly what an undrafted player needs to do to beat the odds and earn a second contract in the NFL. The Seahawks weren’t going to let him go easy, and he wasn’t worried about testing the waters elsewhere after flourishing in this situation. This seemed like a clear case of both parties buying into one another without feeling the need to consider other options.
