The Seattle Seahawks are Super Bowl LX champions, but now the work to defend their title begins. First on the docket will be free agency, and Seattle has plenty of decisions to make regarding their own in-house free agents - such as MVP running back Kenneth Walker III.
However, one current Seahawk who doesn't seem likely to be back in 2026 is cornerback Riq Woolen. Originally a fifth-round selection in the 2022 NFL draft, Woolen has been a staple in Seattle's secondary ever since he burst onto the scene. But it appears Woolen's time in the Emerald City is at an end, and the primary source may be Woolen himself. On Tuesday, Woolen shared the classic gif of Will Smith from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air finale looking at an empty room. He also retweeted a fan account lamenting the end of the Woolen era, but he has since undone the retweet.
Woolen is set to hit unrestricted free agency when it begins on March 9th. His tenure in Seattle was a bit of a roller coaster. At his best, Woolen was true shutdown corner. He has all the physical tools and traits anyone would want in a defensive back. In fact, if you were to attempt to create a defensive back in a Pete Carroll-style laboratory, he would come out looking like Riq Woolen. Unfortunately, there was plenty of frustration with Woolen as well. At his worse, he was an outright liability on the field, surrendering game-losing touchdowns in notable moments like Week 1 to the San Francisco 49ers this year, or overtime against the Rams in 2024.
Not to mention his taunting penalty blunder in the NFC Championship, which gave the Rams new life and a touchdown to draw within striking distance of the Seahawks... on a touchdown he also gave up.
That being said, Woolen's inconsistency might work to Seattle's advantage, if they wanted to keep him. Spotrac is estimating his market value at a one-year, $8.2 million dollar deal. Should the Seahawks decide they wanted to give Woolen one more chance, they could certainly swing that. Of course, that's assuming Mike Macdonald wants to roll the dice with a supremely talented, yet frustrating, young corner.
