I've only recently "discovered" this group. If you are a musician and haven't heard them yet, it's mandatory you go out and buy/download their music right now. Especially guitarists. David "Fuse" Fuiczynski is insanity on the guitar, one of the best and most original sounds I've heard in many, many years.
The music is impossible to describe because it's all over the place. It's possibly what Jimi might sound like if he were alive and innovating today. Fuse's guitar playing is a cross between ... I dunno ... Jimi and John Scofield. The music is jazz, funk, punk, grunge, reggae ... sometimes all in the same song. The lyrics are surprisingly good. Singer Dean Bowman sounds a lot like Lenny Kravitz.
The rest of the band are some of NY's most recognizable session musicians, including bassist Fima Ephron, drummer Gene Lake, and sometimes drummer Jojo Mayer, who has ascended to all-star clinician and superstar drummer status since playing with these guys back in 1995.
The music style isn't innovative and the playing came sometimes come off as indulgent, but they all play so well and pull off some incredibly complex arrangements while making them sound modern and presentable to a wider public not likely to show up for a "musician's band." Honestly, this is not some jam band getting their jollies on 12 minutes of solo wanking. They play music. Their songs are radio length -- between 3:30 and 5 minutes.
