World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler didn’t have his usual stuff through his first two rounds at the Memorial Tournament, despite entering the event as the overwhelming favorite and back-to-back reigning champion at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
Scheffler opened the tournament with a 1-over 73 on Thursday, notching a double-bogey on the 16th hole after hitting his par-3 tee shot into the water.
Things looked bleak for Scheffler at the turn in Round 2 as he bogeyed three consecutive holes on No. 8, 9 and 10. He was ultimately able to bounce back with three back-nine birdies to shoot an even-par 72 on Friday.
Scheffler was clearly frustrated with his game after Round 2.
“I felt like I was going to shoot about 90 today,” Scheffler told reporters. “I felt like I got my first birdie putt of the day on like the 13th hole. … I can’t imagine I hit more than six or seven greens today. Around this golf course with heavy rough and deep bunkers, you’ve got to be hitting the ball in the right spots. For a long time today that was definitely not the case for me.”

Scheffler is tied for 21st place at 1-over par for the tournament, trailing leader JT Poston by 10 strokes heading into the weekend. Poston fired off a 7-under 65 on Friday, securing his spot on top of the leaderboard with a 9-under score for the event.
