SCITUATE — The spirit would've been 'Big Will' Robinson-approved.
The Scituate High boys and girls lacrosse teams competed against in each other in the second annual 'Big Will' tribute game on Monday, May 18 to honor Robinson, the boys team's former assistant coach who died unexpectedly at home at 50 years old during the 2024 season.
Music blared, and many orange beards were painted on, throughout the evening-long jamboree that began with a head-to-head between seventh- and eighth-grade boys/girls teams and was concluded by the girls' 10-7 victory in the late-night varsity showdown.
Robinson's son Willy, who is enrolled at Army West Point, and family were in attendance to see his daughter, Myah, a freshman, play for the varsity squad in the scrimmage.
"He would've absolutely loved it, without a doubt," boys coach Mark Puzzangara said of the event.
The two teams competed as T-shirts were sold to benefit the Will Robinson Memorial Scholarship.
"The pride the kids have playing in the game and doing it for the greater good and the Robinson family, it's so nice to see," said girls coach Amy Sabolis, who taught both Willy and Myah in physical education. "Everybody's here for the same reason."
"I think he would've liked to see how many people he impacted on and off the field, just how many people showed up to watch and how many people were playing," senior Cam Cerrusi said.
Prior to enrolling at Army, Willy Robinson scored six goals, including the overtime winner, as a junior to lift Scituate to an emotional 12-11 victory over Falmouth in the Division 3 semifinals merely days after his father's death in early June 2024.

Willy Robinson finished his high school career as Scituate's all-time leader in points (407) and goals (296), earning Patriot Ledger Player of the Year honors at the end of last spring. He led the Sailors to the Division 3 state championship and tallied 80 goals and 27 assists for the season.
The tribute game, staged just before the Division 3 state tournament commences, is now a jolt for both teams as they plot more late-season runs -- the boys (11-7) are ranked No. 4 in the MIAA power rankings and the girls (10-7) are sixth.
Said senior Parker Shaw, "(Coach Robinson) always brought the energy to our practices, so coming out here and having a good time, it reminds us of him."
Puzzangara: "Just the community coming together. Seeing all of the shirts, the beards with the paint and everything. Just an amazing day."
Owen Quinn on his favorite 'Big Will' memory: "I don't think I'll forget my freshman year, I was doing awful. It was 3v2 ground balls and I was getting thrown around. He came up to me, pat me on the back and said, 'Tough one, huh?' He was joking around with me and it made my day during a hard practice like that."
Cerrusi on 'Big Will': "He'll be in a cheery mood but he'll also bust his butt to help his players however, whether that's going against him or giving the teeniest tip."
Shaw on the tribute game: "I'll probably remember getting called for a penalty for wearing a hat on the field, but honestly, it was great to see all of the kids come out here. (Between) the contest we had at intermission, the seventh/eighth grade game, it was a great night for the whole town."
Senior Teddy Hare: "I think he would've loved it. Just a lot of kids having fun playing lacrosse and we had a lot of people come out to see it."
