North Carolina basketball finally has some good news in the long wait to get freshman center Sayon Keita to Chapel Hill.
Keita has been granted his student visa and is traveling to North Carolina on Saturday, according to Sherrell McMillan of Inside Carolina. The timing couldn't be much better, with fall semester classes at UNC beginning Monday, August 17.
The 7-footer had been delayed overseas while going through the visa process at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid. Keita is a native of Bamako, Mali, but has spent the past four years playing basketball in Spain.
Keita's arrival means new head coach Michael Malone will now have his entire first North Carolina roster physically in place as preparations for the 2026-27 season continue.
There is, however, still one hurdle remaining.
Keita is still awaiting NCAA clearance before he can officially compete for the Tar Heels. His arrival in Chapel Hill doesn't resolve that process, but clearing the visa hurdle is an important step forward after UNC spent much of the summer waiting for one of its most intriguing newcomers to get to campus.
Keita committed to North Carolina on April 28, becoming an important addition to Malone's first roster. He made his professional debut with FC Barcelona last season and most recently helped Barcelona's youth team win the 2026 adidas NextGen Tournament championship in Athens. Across four games at that event, Keita averaged 9.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in 18 minutes per game.
Those defensive tools are a significant part of Keita's appeal. He was named Defensive MVP at the NBPA Top 100 Camp in 2025 after averaging 3.2 blocks per game, then averaged four blocks per game at the NBA Academy Games the following month.
The extended delay in Keita's arrival also underscored why UNC's recent addition of South Dakota transfer Cameron Fens was so important.
Fens committed to the Tar Heels on August 7 after averaging 14.4 points and 8.7 rebounds while starting all 32 games for South Dakota last season. The 7-footer earned first-team All-Summit League and All-Defensive Team honors, giving Malone a proven veteran option in the middle.
With Keita, Fens, and Alexandros Samodurov all available as options at center, UNC suddenly has both depth and variety at a position that previously carried significant uncertainty.
Now Keita can begin the process of getting settled in Chapel Hill, joining his teammates, and adjusting to college life just as the academic year begins.
The NCAA clearance still needs to come through. But after a summer of waiting, Keita is finally on his way to North Carolina — and Malone's first Tar Heel roster is finally all together.
