Nov. 5—JAMESTOWN — Before the Jamestown High School girl's swimming and diving team's first practice of the season, Sawyer Moser was just hoping she could keep up with everyone else.
Keeping pace hasn't been an issue for the seventh grade swim star.
"It has been a great first season on the high school team," Moser said. "I love swimming with the older girls. It has been very exciting being a part of the team, traveling and meeting new people."
Moser is one of the top swimmers for head coach Ben Smith and the Blue Jays.
"I started swimming when I was in second grade for Jamestown Jaws and later PRO (Prairie Rose) Swim Club," Moser said. "My older brother and I started swimming at the same time. My little sister swims, too. They are both encouraging teammates and I love swimming with them. I've put a lot of time and work into swimming and I'm excited to see what happens next."
On Oct. 23 during the Jays' dual against West Fargo Sheyenne, Moser collected a second-place finish in the 200 IM (individual medley), finishing the race in 2:35.21. The seventh grader also placed second in the 100 yard backstroke, turning in a time of 1:11.15, only 0.28 seconds behind race winner, Ava Hoornaert of West Fargo Sheyenne.
Moser and Marissa Moltzen, along with Adelina Domkova and Sophie Gilbertson, turned in a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:10.28. In the 400 freestyle relay, Moser, Moltzen, Gilbertson and Mia Berndt placed second with a time of 4:27.70.
Against Fargo Shanley last month, Moser turned in a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:11.
Against Moorhead, Minnesota and Bismarck High on Sept. 23, Moser touched the wall 0.41 seconds after first-place finisher Zoey Johnson of Moorhead. Moser also earned second-place honors in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:09.73. Moser headed up the Jays' 400 freestyle relay team, which ended up placing third with a time of 4:25.10.
"At the beginning of the season, I wrote down the times I wanted to achieve in my events," Moser said. "I have reached some of those and I'm still working on the rest. One of my goals is to get a state qualifying time in the 100 backstroke. I'm just 0.48 seconds away."
The Blue Jays wrapped up the regular season last week.
"There were a couple memorable swims this season, including winning the 200 freestyle in Grand Forks, dropping 3 seconds and getting second place in the 200 IM in Jamestown and coming super close to my 100 backstroke goal," Moser said.
The 2025 West Region Meet will kick off on Nov. 7 at the Mandan Aquatic Center. State qualifiers will then compete at the 2025 State Swimming and Diving Meet Nov. 14-15 at West Fargo's Hurlburt Aquatic Facility.
"My goals for the rest of the year are to stay positive and just have fun and to not put to much pressure on myself to perform well," Moser said. "I'd like to thank my siblings, parents, grandparents and my coaches for supporting me every day."
