Oregon Army National Guard Maj. Tommy Vu, a Salem man and physician assistant, has beat the world record for most chest-to-ground push-ups in one hour.
Vu, 38, completed 1,721 chest-to-ground push-ups in one hour at West Coast Strength gym in West Salem, gaining his sixth world record and beating the previous record holder's 1,530 repetitions on Sept. 20.
"My goal was around 1,600, but I like to give myself a bit of headspace," Vu said in a news release. "As the crowd gets into it, you know, the first half I do great. The second half, I feed off of the energy in the crowd and then all the cheering and motivation."
In addition to being the new world record holder for most chest-to-ground push-ups in one hour, Vu holds the world record for most burpee pull-ups in one hour, a total of 611 repetitions, which he completed in December 2023.
Vu used a metronome set to 2.1 seconds per repetition for his record attempt and had support from family and friends who came to cheer him on.
"His family plays a crucial role in his training regimen, with his wife, Linda, and son, Adonis, present to support him, along with fellow Oregon National Guard members who cheered him on throughout the attempt," the release said.
Other world records Vu has held include the fastest time to complete 25 burpees, the most hand-release push-ups in one hour, the most chest-to-ground burpees completed in one hour, and the most burpee pull-ups in one minute.
Vu said he will next attempt to reclaim his 2024 chest-to-ground burpee record, which was broken in 2025.
"Now with this training, my arms are going to be so much stronger, so I'm hoping to reclaim that record," Vu said in the release.
For each of his record attempts, Vu also pledges to different charities. For his chest-to-ground push-up world record, Vu said he would donate $1 for every repetition he completed to the Oregon Humane Society for a total of $1,721.
Vu's new record is currently pending official verification by Guinness World Records.
