The Indianapolis Colts signed free agent safety Jonathan Owens, and Over the Cap has those contract details.

Owens signed a one-year deal with the Colts worth $1.402 million. This includes a $187,500 signing bonus that will be guaranteed.

Owens' salary cap hit for the 2026 season is $1.262 million.

Jonathan Owens' fit with the Colts

Owens will presumably have the opportunity to compete with Juanyeh Thomas and perhaps Hunter Wohler for the starting safety spot next to Cam Bynum.

Owens adds experience to the position group, entering his ninth NFL season and having made 35 starts, while appearing in 82 games. For his career, Owens has two interceptions, 10 pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and 295 total tackles.

The bulk of his playing time defensively came in 2022 and 2023, when Owens made 28 starts. In his first season with Chicago (2024), Owens made five starts and played 427 defensive snaps. This past year, he was mostly a special teams contributor, where he's played over 1,000 snaps in his career.

If Owens doesn't start, he can provide experienced depth off the bench and someone the Colts can call on if in a pinch. He can also be a regular special teams contributor.

Of note, if the Colts were to move on from Owens during roster cutdowns, they would only incur a dead cap hit of $187,500.
