Now we're talking. The New Orleans Saints made their first move to reach salary cap compliance by restructuring their contract with Chase Young. Expect more to follow. NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill first reported the development.

Young was set to carry the team's highest salary cap hit in 2026 at $20.5 million, most of it coming from a high base salary. By reducing his $14.83 million base to the league minimum and converting the difference into a new signing bonus, the Saints could save up to $10.9 million. We'll find out for sure as more details come out. There was some thought that Young could sign another extension after the Saints gave him this deal last offseason to both lower this year's cap hit and add more years down the line, but that doesn't appear to be the case. He's currently under contract through 2027.

And that alone just about gets the Saints to salary cap compliance. The experts at Over The Cap had them in the red by more than $11.6 million, and a simple restructure would nearly wipe that away. Another restructure with a veteran on the right side of 30 like Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy or Young's fellow edge rusher Carl Granderson would be more than enough to get the Saints over the finish line. At that point, they don't have to worry about compliance so much as creating enough cap space to sign new players.
