The New Orleans Saints have already begun making moves after the 2025 NFL draft. After adding veteran free agent Chris Rumph II, a defensive end with experience in Brandon Staley's system, they cut one of their quarterbacks to open a roster spot for him. Backup quarterback Ben DiNucci announced Tuesday morning that the Saints had released him, acknowledging that "The NFL is a tough business. Always has been and always will be," and that he's going to "Control what I can control and go back to work." Good luck to him.
DiNucci started one game in five years as an NFL backup, and he first joined the Saints practice squad last season, so there wasn't much of a salary cap commitment made here. It isn't shocking for the Saints to cut down from five quarterbacks to four after drafting Tyler Shough in the second round, but DiNucci being the first out the door is at least a little surprising. He's played for Kellen Moore before on the Dallas Cowboys and knows the coach's playbook well. Having him in the room as a veteran presence who can help his younger teammates break down film and memorize new terminology may have been valuable. But clearly the Saints are going in a different direction.
Something to note is that Derek Carr still hasn't joined the team for spring workouts in Metairie, so it's just three passers in the room, for now: Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener. Don't be shocked if the Saints go shopping for a better option on the free agent market who can round out the group, though obvious choices like Cooper Rush and Easton Stick (who played for Moore in the past) have already found other work around the NFL. At the same time, the Saints have an abundance of former quarterbacks on their coaching staff. Besides Moore himself you've got offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier and quarterbacks coach Scott Tolzien. That may be all the mentorship they feel these young guns need.
