New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd has been chosen for the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week award, having blocked a field goal against the Carolina Panthers in his team's win on the road in Week 10. It's the first time Shepherd has won a Defensive or Special Teams Player of the Week award in his eight-year NFL career.

While the Saints didn't recover that blocked field goal try -- or even get a turnover on downs off of it, thanks to a bizarre ruling by the officiating crew -- it was still an impactful play. Good on Shepherd for getting up and blocking that ball.

If the Saints are going to turn their season around, they'll need more impact plays like this. Blocking kicks, creating turnovers, and stealing possessions are the fastest way to take control of a game. Shepherd stepped up when his team needed to here. Others need to follow his example after the bye week.
