Bowen Byram’s name just won’t stay out of the rumor mill in Buffalo—and this time, the noise feels a little louder than usual.
According to NHL insider Darren Dreger, multiple teams are exploring a trade for the 25-year-old left-shot defenseman after he completed his second straight 82-game season with the Sabres.
For a player Buffalo has leaned on for durability and steady offensive production, the renewed interest adds another layer to an already familiar storyline.
The Cranbrook, B.C. native was selected fourth overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2019 NHL draft and spent parts of four seasons in Denver before being dealt to Buffalo in a one-for-one swap for forward Casey Mittelstadt.
Trade speculation has followed him ever since. Last off-season, the St. Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks, and Columbus Blue Jackets were all reportedly linked to Byram as the Sabres weighed their long-term direction on the blue line.

Despite the constant chatter, Byram has continued to produce. He has played all 82 regular-season games in each of the past two seasons, posting a career-high 38 points in 2024-25 before topping that with 42 points in the 2025-26 campaign.
Byram is now entering the final season of the two-year contract he signed with Buffalo, carrying a $6.25 million cap hit. He becomes eligible for an extension on July 1, 2026, but if no deal is reached, he’ll be on track to hit unrestricted free agency on July 1, 2027.
His combination of size, skating ability, and offensive instincts still makes him an attractive piece for teams around the league, especially those confident they can get a little more consistency out of his all-around game.
That’s where things get interesting for Buffalo.
The Sabres are at a crossroads with a talented defenseman who has value on the ice—and even more value on the market. Whether that leads to a contract extension, a trade, or simply more speculation remains to be seen, but Byram’s situation is once again one of the more closely watched storylines in Buffalo heading into the off-season.
