The Pittsburgh Pirates got a big boost to the lineup on Sunday with Ryan O’Hearn activated off the injured list.

O’Hearn had been placed on the IL on May 17 after suffering a right quad muscle strain, but was activated as the corresponding move for Konnor Griffin being placed on the IL.

In the bottom of the second inning and on the fifth pitch he saw in his first at-bat from injury, O’Hearn took Zebby Matthews deep for a home run in his first game back.

“You want to make an impact when you come back from a rehab assignment or anything," O'Hearn said postgame on Sunday. “So I hadn't seen live pitching, but confident in my abilities. I felt it good in the cage and stuff, so [it was] cool to have it translate in the first at-bat like that.”

O’Hearn was one of the Pirates’ biggest offseason additions as Pittsburgh signed him to a two-year, $29 million deal to bolster the lineup, which he has done.

This season with the Pirates, O’Hearn is hitting .294 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs as he’s been a key part of Pittsburgh’s offense.

O’Hearn’s home run also helped Pittsburgh get out to an early lead en route to a 9-3 win to sweep the Minnesota Twins at home.
