On Saturday night, Western Michigan defeated Boston University in the Frozen Four National Championship. Coming into the tournament, not many thought that WMU could get it done and they continued to prove everyone wrong.
This result ended the college season, which means these two teams could see players leave for pro hockey. The Chicago Blackhawks, who have already signed a handful of players as they were eliminated from NCAA competition, made a move on a player from the National Championship.
Chicago selected B.U. captain Ryan Greene in the second round (57th overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft. On Sunday, the Blackhawks got him signed to a three-year entry-level deal that carries a $950,000 cap hit.
During his time in college, Greene took steps as a leader that eventually had him named captain in 2024-25. He also grew as a player both offensively and defensively.
Greene is very responsible in his own end, which is half the battle in development. Over the last season, Greene had 13 goals and 25 assists for 38 points in 41 games. Those are all collegiate career highs.
When Greene reaches pro hockey, whether it's the NHL or AHL, he likely won't be a dominant offensive player. What he can be is a hard-working middle-six forward who plays the right way.
A lot can go right for a player if they are good on the forecheck and are responsible defensively. Greene can be that guy. Championship-caliber teams need players who play with the effort that Greene does regularly. He also has enough talent to make a difference offensively from time to time too which adds to his value.
Greene is expected to play for the Blackhawks in their final two games of the season. His NHL debut will come on Monday night against the Montreal Canadiens.
