After giving the media a chance to speak to head coach Greg Schiano, offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarocca, and defensive coordinator Travis Johansen, the program has started the press conferences where members of the media can ask questions to position coaches. First up was tight ends coach Scott Vallone, who is known as one of the best recruiters on the team and is overseeing a position that is in the midst of a battle for the starting spot.

The first question had to do with the battle going on for the tight end position and if anyone has jumped out so far in his eyes as someone to keep an eye on. A few of the names he dropped when answering the question were Logan Blake and Mike Higgins due to their time in the system. He then mentioned other names, such as transfer tight end Kam Anthony and Ben Rothhaar, while mentioning that Blake performed well in the few games he started in 2024 when the position was dealing with a heavy amount of injuries.

The second question had to do with what he liked about incoming transfer Kam Anthony that made him want to bring him in, and what they expect from him in the fall, given that he is dealing with an injury right now.

“I remember my first game. I remember we played Cincinnati in 2009. How nervous I was playing that game. His first college snaps were against a Big Ten team and an SEC team. He went out there and he competed.

Had some really good reps. You know, had some freshman moments. He’s a guy that was, you know, very capable of putting his hand in the dirt. Moved the line of scrimmage. You know, and he was able to make some plays in the passing game. He didn’t have a thousand catches, but he did have the ability to catch the intermediate ball and puncture and things like that. So, really like his skill set. Like that he had three years of eligibility. I think he’s going to add some competition to the room, which is what we’re looking for. He’s a great kid. I mean, he’s working his butt off. You guys know he’s not competing now, but he’s trying to gain every inch that he can while he’s not on the practice field. So, I really like what we’re seeing from Kam right now.”

Later in the press conference, Vallone was asked a question that had more to do with the recruiting side of things and how he got connected in North Carolina, one of the areas he has recruited very well. He mentioned that it started with the recruitment of Ben Black and Isaiah Crumpler, who were North Carolina prospects. According to Vallone. he did not have many ties in North Carolina, but since the program wanted those prospects, he made the connections needed to land both, and his network in the state only grew from there.

“Made some phone calls and got feet on the ground and started to meet some people,” said Vallone on his recruitment strategy in North Carolina.
