Rutgers opens Big Ten play with series win vs. Michigan State

Rutgers Baseball began Big Ten play with a series against Michigan State over the weekend at Bainton Field in Piscataway. The Scarlet Knights got off to a good start, taking two out of three from the Spartans and improving to 11-8 overall.

Game One​


Rutgers began the weekend with a strong offensive performance during a 9-4 win.

The Scarlet Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the first before extending in the third. Trey Wells got a four-run inning started with a single before Matt Chatelle and Yomar Carreras drove in runs with hits.

Michigan State cut into the lead with two runs in the sixth but Rutgers put it away late. Wells delivered a two-run triple to put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth. Wells finished with two hits and three RBI while Carreras drove in two runs.

Peyton Bonds continues an incredible start with a 4-for-4 game with three runs scored.

Game Two​


Michigan State flipped the script in game two on Saturday with a 9-3 win.

The Spartans totaled 16 hits on the way to nine runs. They got to Zack Konstantinovsky early. He allowed seven hits and five runs, three earned in 2 1/3 innings. Michigan State took an 8-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

Rutgers got on the board on a Quinten Perilli double in the fifth inning. Bonds and Joey Erace drove in runs in the seventh as well.

Erace and Chatelle finished with two hits and an RBI each.

Game Three​


Rutgers ended the weekend with an 8-6 victory in the rubber game of the series.

After falling behind 1-0 early, Rutgers scored in four consecutive innings beginning in the fourth on the way to an 8-3 lead.

Ryan Jaros got it started with a sac fly in the fourth before a Perilli double scored one. Jaros would score two more on a single in the fifth inning.

The Scarlet Knights stayed hot as Wells and Chase Krewson contributed RBI to a three-run sixth inning.

Rutgers totaled 12 hits in the game. Carreras went 3-for-5 while Charlie Meglio finished with two hits and two runs scored. Jaros drove in three to lead the way.

Chris Sand got the start on the mound, going 3 1/3 innings allowing one run on four hits. Joe Mazza earned the win going 2 2/3 innings and allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
