The University of North Florida and Jacksonville University come into their second meeting of the season on Feb. 28 at UNF Arena (6 p.m., ESPN+) with some momentum, hard to come by this season and certainly not the case when they last played on Feb. 14 at JU's Swisher Gym.
Both teams won home games on Feb. 26 against in-state ASUN rivals, squaring the season in each case at one win apiece. JU freshman Hayden Woods scored 25 points and junior forward Jason Thirdkill Jr. had 12 points and 11 rebounds in an 89-85 victory over Stetson and UNF stormed past Florida Gulf Coast in the second half, erasing a 36-27 halftime deficit to win 76-70.
When the two teams last met, JU was on a four-game losing streak and UNF had lost four of five.
The highest the Dolphins can climb in the ASUN standings with a victory over the Ospreys will be eighth place. The Ospreys could go from 11th to eighth by beating the Dolphins, and other dominoes falling on the final day of the ASUN regular season.
However, both JU and UNF will be playing in the opening round on March 4, the Dolphins returning to UNF Arena and the Ospreys playing at Swisher Gym, due to an ASUN rule that prohibits them from playing a first-round game at their own gym.
And yes, it's conceivable they could meet in the opening game of the tournament, in which case the game would be at UNF, with JU as the home team. JU is in a three-way tie for eighth place with Bellarmine and Stetson, with UNF a game behind.
If either or both survive the first day, they will play in the ASUN quarterfinals on March 6 at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Ospreys started the second half on a 15-6 run to pull even at 42-42, with sophomore guard Kent Jackson connecting twice from beyond the 3-point arc. UNF took the lead for good on UNF senior guard Kamrin Oriol's layup with 7:21 left and the Ospreys led by as many as eight points with 41 seconds left.
Oriol led with 26 points, graduate guard Dalton Gayman came off the bench for 15, Jackson has 11 and freshman forward B.J. Plummer added 10 points and six rebounds.
The Dolphins out-rebounded Stetson 37-24 and sank 30 of 31 free throws in their Senior Night victory. After leading 69-57 on a dunk by junior guard Jaylen Jordan with 6:56 left, JU stayed ahead by making 16 of 16 free throws, with junior forward Donovan Rivers (16 points) connecting on 6 of 6.
