Romania coach Mircea Lucescu has been hospitalised with heart problems and will miss Tuesday's friendly international in Slovakia, the national federation FRS has said.
The FRS said that 80-year-old Lucescu fell ill during a technical meeting on Sunday, received first treatment by team doctors and then medical staff from ambulances immediately called who stabilized his condition and took him to Bucharest's university hospital.
The federation said he was stable and "undergoing diagnostic tests and receiving the necessary medical treatment to stabilize his heart rate."
The hospital said Lucescu was diagnosed with serious cardiac irregularities and was receiving inpatient treatment.
Sunday's training was cancelled and because players were affected by the news attempts were made to cancel the match which was however not possible. Assistant coach Ionel Gare will be in charge on Tuesday in Bratislava.
Lucescu coached the team 1981-1986 and returned in 2024. Romania lost a World Cup play-off semi-final in Turkey on Thursday and will miss the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
