Rules question

The other night in the Oklahoma game when the Suns were running time off the clock at the end of the game made me think of something I've thought before which is....What is to prevent a player from throwing the ball straight up in the air as high as he can to burn a few seconds off the clock? Is straight up above the court considered out of bounds after a certain height? Do they get charged with a delay of game perhaps? I've seen players throw the ball towards the fans once in a while to end a game but never seen them throw it directly above the court. Just wondering...

you can do that. i believe someone did that already last year (but lost the ball, got the ball stolen from him and with few seconds left the other team made a buzzer beater, they lost). but it's not illegal

These arenas are so huge I thought a player could burn a lot of time with a huge throw upwards. I wonder how much time could be burned off with a optimal throw...hmmm
