There was some hope that the Los Angeles Lakers would re-sign forward Rui Hachimura this summer. He became a free agent last week, and after several days went by, he remained available, which led to speculation that the Lakers were trying to find a way to keep him.

But on Monday, he agreed to a two-year, $28 million deal with the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers reportedly tried to work out a sign-and-trade with the Lakers, but to no avail.

Hachimura took to social media to bid farewell to the Lakers organization and its fans after three and a half seasons with the team.

Hachimura first came to the Lakers midway through the 2022-23 season in a trade with the Washington Wizards that sent out guard Kendrick Nunn and three second-round draft picks. At the time, the Lakers were still struggling following the disastrous Russell Westbrook trade in 2021, and they badly needed to rebuild functional depth after jettisoning three rotation players and the rights to their 2021 first-round draft pick for the ill-fitting Westbrook.

During his time with the Lakers, Hachimura averaged 12.3 points a game and shot 51.6% overall and 41.5% from 3-point range during the regular season. He routinely elevated his game during the playoffs, and this spring, he averaged 17.5 points and shot 56.9% from 3-point land in 10 playoff games.

He is currently the NBA's all-time career leader in 3-point accuracy at 51.6%.
