Royals DFA former Phillies lefty after horrific outing against Yankees originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Kansas City Royals have seen enough.
On Wednesday, the team designated a left-hander starting pitcher for assignment after allowing seven earned runs in just 2.1 innings against the New York Yankees last night.
According to an announcement from the AL Central club, Bailey Falter has been DFA'd.
Falter is out of minor league options, so the Royals could not send him directly to Triple-A Omaha without first passing through waivers.
"Despite the fact that Falter allowed 15 runs in a dozen innings following last year’s trade, the Royals opted to tender him a contract," Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors wrote.
"That resulted in a $3.6MM deal for the current season, which all but guarantees that Falter will pass through waivers unclaimed and accept an outright assignment to Omaha. Rejecting the assignment would mean forfeiting the remainder of that money."
Before last year's trade to the Royals, Falter pitched for parts of three seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, mostly as a starter.

He began his career in 2021 with the Philadelphia Phillies and operated as a swingman, making both starts and relief appearances.
Kansas City has five days to trade, release, or place Falter on outright waivers. During his time with the Royals, he allowed 30 earned runs on 44 hits in just 21.2 innings.
