Royals' Cole Ragans gets brutal injury update with elbow surgery likely originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Kansas City Royals have not been having a good 2026 season at all, as their 33-46 record has them 8.0 games back in the AL Central, and 6.5 back in the weak AL Wild Card.
One of the reasons for the team's struggles this year has been injuries. Bobby Witt Jr. is banged up right now. Vinnie Pasquantino, Maikel Garcia, Jonathan India, Kris Bubic, and Carlos Esteves are all on the injured list as well.
But the Cole Ragans injury is one of the more concerning ones for the Royals. According to Jaylon T. Thompson of the Kansas City Star, Ragans received a brutal update on his elbow injury, which revealed he will likely undergo surgery.
Royals get bad news on Cole Ragans amid likely elbow surgery
"Royals Matt Quatraro said LHP Cole Ragans is likely to undergo a surgical procedure for his elbow injury," Tompson reports.
Quatraro said, "We anticipate it being a surgical procedure. We don't know, as of right now, what it means. He's got to see another doctor as well, but we anticipate it being surgical."
Ragans was recently sent to the 60-day injured list following a setback with a left elbow injury. This situation is still a bit up in the air, as the full extent of Ragans' injury isn't known.

But this update from Quatraro is significant in that Ragans is likely to undergo surgery, which will likely keep him out for a while longer.
Before landing on the injured list this season, Ragans has a 4.84 ERA with 45 strikeouts and a 1-4 record in eight starts. He last went 3.0 innings, allowing one hit against the Cleveland Guardians on May 6, but hasn't pitched since then.
This is a very concerning situation for Ragans, and some terrible news for the Royals. It looks likely that Ragans is going to miss quite some time, as surgery is likely in his future amid this uncertain elbow injury.
