SOFTBALL

Utica nipped on road

Cheyenne Smith struck out six without a walk and scattered four hits for Utica in a 2-1 loss at Big Walnut.

Kiersten Hull led Utica (4-7) with two hits, including a double. Emily Meyers and Bethany Glancy each tripled with Meyers driving in a run.

Valley drops road game

Emory Whisner hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning, but that was all Licking Valley could muster in a 6-3 loss at Mount Vernon (11-2, 6-2) in Licking County League-Buckeye Division play.

Whisner also struck out two in 2 1/3 scoreless innings. D’Neya Dennis and Alexa Gilliam walked and scored for the first-place Panthers (10-3, 7-1), who host Watkins Memorial on Monday. The Warriors are tied with Mount Vernon for second in the loss column.

Johnstown falls

Abigail Wood struck out 10 and allowed six hits and no earned runs for Johnstown in a 4-1 loss to Mathews during the Mid-Ohio Classic at Ontario.

Jenna Hochanadel singled for the lone hit for the Johnnies (4-7), and Lucia Kuhn walked and scored when Brooklyn Wood was hit by a pitch.
