It was a rough year to be a New Orleans sports fan. Both the Saints and Pelicans had their worst season since the mid-2000’s.
The Saints and Pelicans combined for 26 victories this year. The Times-Picayune’s Rod Walker pointed out that tied the lowest combined wins in a single season between the franchises, previously set in 2004-2005. At that time, the Pelicans were still the Hornets and in their third year of existence.
Both teams dealt with massive injuries in 2024. Alvin Kamara, Chris Olave, Derek Carr, Erik McCoy, Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and C.J. McCollum all missed significant time this season. Injuries and disappointment were the defining traits of the Saints' and Pelicans’ seasons.
Injuries have been common for both franchises, but they took a toll to an unusual degree for the Saints. They lost their quarterback, top two wide receivers and best offensive lineman to injury. The list could go on, and it was a key contributing factor to the Saints' offensive failures.
The Saints failed to get to seven wins for the first time since 2005, and the Pelicans' 21 wins was their lowest in an 82-game season since 2004-2005. There’s a chance both teams fire their head coach due to low production; if it happens, it would be the first time both franchises made a coaching change in the same year. On Monday, Pelicans executive vice president David Griffin was let go. Maybe Mickey Loomis should be on notice, too.
