Poppy McIlroy doesn’t know it yet, but she’ll be watching clips of the 2025 Masters Tournament for the rest of her life. And not just clips of her dad.

The 4-year-old daugther of Rory McIlroy stole the show at Wednesday’s Par 3 Contest when she drained a slippery putt that sent the crowd in a tizzy and soon went viral.

On Sunday, after McIlroy defeated Justin Rose in a playoff to win the Masters Tournament and become the sixth player to complete the career grand slam, he scooped up Poppy in an emotional embrace.

At the Green Jacket Presentation Ceremony, McIlroy’s voice cracked as he began to talk about his family and team.

“The only thing I would say to my daughter Poppy that’s sitting over there – never give up on your dreams. Never ever give up on your dreams,” he said, adding, “keep coming back, keep working hard and if you put your mind to it, you can do anything. I love you.”

Later that evening at Augusta National Golf Club, McIlroy sat down with Anna Jackson of Sky Sports to talk about the journey to join golf’s most elite list.

Jackson asked how he’d one day explain to Poppy what just happened and why it was such a big deal.

“I think it’s a story of perseverance,” McIlroy began, adding, “you know, there was a lot of years that I came here and I wasn’t able to achieve what I wanted to achieve. But I never let that discourage me or get me down. I kept coming back and I kept giving it another go.”

And then McIlroy surprisingly took it a step further by sharing a story from earlier in the week that Poppy will no doubt hear retold for decades to come.

“They have the daycare here,” said McIlroy, “and she came back with a T-shirt on Friday, and on the back of that T-shirt was all the past champions of the Masters Tournament. And she asked me, ‘Daddy why is your name not on the back of this T-shirt?’ ”

Two days later, a relieved and joy-filled McIlroy delivered the good news.

“So I said to her after I played, ‘Poppy, next year my name is going to be on the T-shirt!’ ”
