Roquan Smith does not need much convincing when it comes to Jesse Minter’s defensive vision.

The Ravens’ defensive leader has already sounded aligned with Minter’s approach, praising the coach’s résumé while acknowledging that Baltimore’s system will require players to trust the details behind the structure. Smith said Minter’s “track record speaks for itself” and added that there is a “method behind the madness,” a telling comment from the player who will be responsible for setting the tone, communicating adjustments, and making sure the defense functions at every level.

That connection matters because Smith remains the centerpiece of Baltimore’s defense. The All-Pro linebacker is coming off another elite season after earning his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl nod, and his production continues to stack up with the best linebackers in the sport. Smith finished last season with 130 tackles, including 76 solo stops, ranking 15th in the NFL and ninth in the AFC, while breaking into the Ravens’ top six all-time tackles list.

His career numbers are even more impressive. Smith owns 1,134 tackles, the most by any player through his first eight NFL seasons since 1987, giving Baltimore one of the league’s most reliable defensive anchors entering a season built around correction, continuity, and a higher ceiling.

The Ravens had a mixed defensive profile last season. Baltimore ranked 24th in total defense, allowing 354.5 yards per game, and struggled badly against the pass, ranking 30th at 247.9 passing yards allowed per game. The run defense remained strong, ranking 10th at 106.6 yards per game, while the unit allowed 23.4 points per game, which ranked 18th. The red zone defense was sturdier, finishing sixth in touchdown rate at 50.8%.

The larger context is that Baltimore’s defense improved significantly as the season developed. From Weeks 6-18, a 12-game stretch that showed what the group could become, the Ravens ranked in the top five in red zone touchdown rate, rushing yards allowed per game, scoring defense, and third-down percentage. That late-season surge gives Minter a foundation to build from rather than a full rebuild. Smith will be central to that process. His instincts, range, and physicality allow the Ravens to be multiple, and his ability to process the game gives Minter the on-field extension every defensive play-caller needs. If Smith is already embracing the plan, it should help speed up the transition for the rest of the defense.

Baltimore still has questions to answer, especially in the secondary after last season’s issues against the pass. The Ravens need better consistency on the back end, improved communication, and more reliable coverage across all three levels. They also need the front to generate pressure while helping the defense stay ahead of the sticks.

Smith’s comments suggest the Ravens understand that the solution will not come from simplicity alone. Minter’s defense may require patience, detail, and trust, but Baltimore has the personnel to make it work if the unit stays healthy and carries over the momentum it found late last season.

For Smith, the standard is clear. He has already established himself as one of the NFL’s most productive linebackers, but his next challenge is helping Minter turn a talented Ravens defense into one of the league’s most complete units. If the two remain aligned, Baltimore’s defense should have a chance to climb quickly in 2026.
