If you thought Michael Kim's round of 59 would be the only impressive day at the 3M Open, let me introduce you to Jackson Koivun.
The rookie sensation lit up the back nine at TPC Twin Cities in the third round, shooting an 8-under 28 on the back nine. That's a tournament record that was buoyed by a pair of eagles and four birdies, and it helped the 21-year-old to a 10-under 61 on the day and a three-shot lead at 20 under.
Koivun started his day four strokes behind Kim and began with a modest two birdies on the front nine. That birdie on the par-4 ninth kicked off a remarkable run for the national champion from Auburn, capped by two straight birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 and an eagle 3 on the 596-yard No. 18.
"I definitely felt some nerves, started to see my name as leading, then all of a sudden I par two holes and I'm right back tied," Koivun said after his round on CBS. "Just kind of had a good mental check that you gotta keep the pedal down, especially on a golf course like this where you can make a lot of birdies."
Koivun is taking part in just his third start as a full card-carrying member of the PGA Tour. He missed the cut at his debut at the John Deere Classic at the start of July before tying for 10th at the ISCO Championship. At his second U.S. Open in June, he made his first cut at a major and tied for 23rd at 5 over par.
At Auburn, Koivun became the first ever to win all three major golf honors — the Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan and Fred Haskins awards — twice.
Koivun leads through three rounds with a three-stroke lead over Emiliano Grillo and Ben Kohles. He'll tee off with Grillo in the final pairing at 1:40 p.m. ET Sunday, July 26.
Round 4 of the 2026 3M Open broadcasts nationally Golf Channel at 1 p.m. before switching to CBS at 3 p.m. July 26. Featured group and hole streaming from PGA Tour Live is available on the ESPN app with a subscription to the Select plan.
