Capps Tops NHRA Qualifying, Gets Hall of Fame HonorIcon Sportswire - Getty Images
Ron Capps emerged from the first day of the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway as the top Funny Car qualifier with a 3.883-second elapsed time, 333.91 mph, but it was his selection to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America that he described as “unbelievable.”
Capps was driving home from a dealership when he received the call from the Hall of Fame based in Daytona Beach, Florida, and he had to pull over and stop before receiving the good news.
“When he said he was from the Hall of Fame down in Daytona Beach, I was like, ‘Oh boy. They were either asking me to attend something or I’m getting really good news.’ It was an unbelievable phone call,” said the three-time NHRA Funny Car champion who’s entering the Hall of Fame in the drag racing category. “It was a cool moment.”
Capps was notified of the honor a couple of days before all of the 2027 inductees were announced at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, so he didn’t know until later that fellow drag racer Angelle Sampey would also be inducted. Sampey, a three-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, is representing the motorcycles category.
