Romeo Lavia has made his first appearance in over four months, marking his return with a strong showing against Arsenal that saw him become the first Chelsea player this season to achieve a specific statistical milestone.

While the performance was not disastrous, discipline issues again proved costly.

Neto’s second yellow card for a reckless challenge stood out, drawing criticism from Chris Sutton, who did not hold back after the 2-1 defeat.

One positive, though, was Lavia’s display. Returning from injury, he managed to impress despite limited minutes on the pitch.

Even Liam Rosenior noticed his impact and mentioned it during the broadcast.

The 22-year-old Belgian also set a new mark for the club in just his short spell on the field.

Since joining Chelsea, Lavia has missed 98 games through injury. But he finally made his comeback after a 23-game absence, coming on against Arsenal.

The former Southampton midfielder was only on the pitch for 15 minutes, but during that time he managed to set a new club record for the season.

Lavia demonstrated perfect efficiency, completing 100% of his passes (12 out of 12) and 100% of his long balls (successfully completing his only attempt to switch play). Additionally, he won 100% of his ground duels.

Mamadou Sarr’s record-setting debut against Hull City for Chelsea exemplifies a growing trend of players delivering spectacular performances immediately upon their return.

What could come next for Lavia?

Lavia brings a missing element to a midfield that has sometimes struggled with game management. Andrey Santos adds physicality and Enzo Fernandez brings creativity, but Lavia’s calmness gives Chelsea more control and stability when they need it most.

He is expected to be eased back in gradually, starting with the upcoming FA Cup tie against Wrexham, to help him build up match fitness.

With Chelsea still competing across multiple competitions, including the Champions League, his return gives Rosenior more options for rotating his midfield.

If he stays fit and continues to impress, there is every chance he will push Santos for a regular spot, possibly forming a strong partnership with Moises Caicedo in the middle of the park.
