Romano confirms bombshell Man United U-turn as ‘major asset’ now poised to be added to Michael Carrick’s ranks

Marcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United to begin his pre-season preparations along with England teammate Kobbie Mainoo.

As per Fabrizio Romano, the forward will be wearing the No.14 shirt when he is reintegrated into the squad next season, confirming INEOS’ U-turn on his future at the club.

Marcus Rashford: The state of play

Had Rashford been hoping to continue in the iconic No.10 jersey, it would have made for an awkward conversation with Matheus Cunha, who donned the digits throughout his maiden campaign.

Rashford was spotted linking up with his teammates as they made the trip to Ireland for Wednesday’s pre-season clash against rivals Leeds United.

However, the 28-year-old is unlikely to feature in the midweek encounter, and is instead poised to play his first minutes in a United shirt since December 2024 when the Reds take on AC Milan on Saturday, August 15.

Remarkably, it’ll see Rashford come up against the manager who banished him from the first-team: Ruben Amorim. He is winless since taking charge of the Italian giants in mid-June.

Rashford has to maintain recent form after United reintegration

From Michael Carrick’s perspective, he’ll be delighted with the addition of the experienced attacker to his ranks ahead of a campaign in which United will be navigating Champions League football, while also looking to build on last season’s third-placed finish.

Rashford returned 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances for Barcelona last term, nine of which came in the 11 UCL appearances he made.

Journalist Alex Crook believes the Carrington graduate will be a ‘major asset’ for his boyhood club – as long as he’s ‘fully focused’.

For United, he boasts a record of 138 goals and 79 assists in 426 matches across all competitions.

It remains to be seen if he’ll begin 2026/2027 with a starting spot to his name, or whether he’ll have to prove himself to Carrick in the opening fixtures.
